The San Diego Community College Police
Department instituted a Crime Prevention Through Environmental
Design (CPTED) Program in 2002. The program is headed by a police
officer trained as a crime prevention specialist with an emphasis in
crime prevention through environmental design.
The CPTED officer is responsible for
reviewing environmental conditions on and around district
facilities and recommending appropriate action to reduce the
potential for crime. The officer is a resource for department
members dealing with day-to-day crime prevention issues and
projects.
In November of 2002,
San Diego
voters approved a $685 million dollar capital improvement
(construction) bond issue for the district. The CPTED officer
took on the responsibility of reviewing design and development plans
for District capital projects. Working directly with architects,
consultants and developers the officer helps insure new facilities
are crime free by design.
Currently the CPTED program is
developing plans to incorporate state-of-the-art safety technology
into the design of the new facilities. These facilities include
three new College Police stations, one at each of the district’s
three colleges.
