As part of our
efforts to provide a high level of community service, the San Diego
Community College District Police Department created a bicycle
patrol team in 1998. At the time of its inception, the bicycle
patrol team consisted of three police officers and two college
service officers.
The Bicycle Patrol Team is highly visible, highly mobile, and
committed to fostering positive relationships with the visitors,
staff, faculty and student population of our campuses, as well as
the surrounding communities that they serve. Bicycle Patrol Team
Officers provide a level
of service which cannot be matched by police officers on foot or in
marked police cars.
To
join the Bicycle Patrol Team, every Officer must complete a week
long training session where they receive specialized instruction.
From riding up and down stairways to cone courses and emergency
dismounts, officers who complete the session are capable of a vast
array of maneuvers on a mountain bike.
Our
Bicycle Patrol Team has a strong working relationship with the San Diego Police
Department. The team patrols neighborhoods surrounding our campuses.
The team also participates periodically in joint operations to
combat gang activity and crime affecting the communities in
the city of San Diego.
Over time, the Bicycle Patrol
Team has gained an impressive reputation within the community
because of their professionalism, state of the art equipment and
proactive approach to campus law enforcement and community oriented
policing.
