per month. Effective July 1, 2005, a 5% additive
is provided to all dispatchers regardless of their work
schedule.
The District encourages you to apply for this
classification if you possess or can demonstrate any
combination of training, education or other related
experience, including the possession of a valid POST
Public Safety Dispatcher certificate to perform the
duties of a police dispatcher. A background in radio
dispatch, alarm monitoring or a responsible clerical
position involving significant public contact and/or
heavy phone usage is desirable. A successful candidate
must pass a POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training)
background investigation and also successfully complete
a 120-hour POST Dispatch course within the one-year
probationary period.
An original valid typing/keyboarding certificate from an
accredited agency is required at the time the
application is submitted.

Description:

MONTHLY
SALARY
Range 30, $3548-$5176, Office Technical Unit. All new
employees will begin on Step A ($3548), Step B ($3726),
or Step C ($3912), depending upon experience. The salary
range for this classification reflects the market
adjustment additive. Effective July 1, 2005, a 5%
additive is provided to all dispatchers regardless of
their work schedule. The District pays the employee's
share of PERS (Public Employees' Retirement System)
assignment that is approximately 7% and an excellent
benefits package is provided to the employee and all
eligible dependents. *This reflects a market adjustment
additive.
Major factors to be evaluated for this classification
will include the knowledge of: Personnel training and
work direction; Computer operation; Software programs;
San Diego City streets and thoroughfares including San
Diego Community College campuses; Penal, municipal and
health and safety codes; Principles and procedures of
police radio dispatching and equipment; Police radio
codes; Modern office practices, procedures and
equipment; Automated police telecommunications systems
such as CAD and CLETS; Record-keeping techniques;
English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and
vocabulary; Oral and written communications skills;
Other technical aspects of this field.
A typical way for applicants to meet the qualifications
would be equivalent to the following: graduation from
high school and two years of recent, full-time paid,
civilian or military experience in radio dispatch, law
enforcement or related experience. CAD and CLETS
experience is necessary.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES
An original typing/keyboarding certificate is required
to be shown and verified by Human Resources/Employment
at the time the application is submitted. The
certificate must: 1) have been issued within the last
twelve months; 2) have been issued for a 5-minute timed
test; 3) at a rate net speed of at least 40 words per
minute. A duplicated copy of a certificate indicating
that the applicant is certified as a Public Safety
Dispatcher from the Commission on Police Officer
Standards of Training must be submitted with the
application. This classification requires possession of
a valid California Driver’s License that must be
maintain and that would be verified by Human Resources
at the time of appointment. The successful incumbent
must successfully complete D.O.J. course “Train the
Trainer” within 6 months of appointment.
