The Firearms Training Unit (FTU) was established to address training needs within the College Police Department related to the use of firearms. Police Officers from the San Diego Community College District Police Department are required to qualify with their firearms quarterly. The FTU provides training which includes tactical shooting, critical response, and live scenario training. This training provides officers with the necessary skills to be proficient with their firearms in various situations.

Firearms Training Unit

The Firearms Training Unit has a combined total of over fifty years of law enforcement experience which they bring to the Firearms training environment.  Each officer on the FTU has attended over eighty hours of POST mandated training to become certified firearms instructors.

Our officers have the unique advantage of knowing the layout of all of our campuses and District properties.  This tactical advantage, combined with the hours of training they receive from our instructors, adequately prepares them to respond to critical incidents should they occur.

Additionally, the San Diego Community College Police Department implemented less lethal capabilities utilizing the beanbag round and shotgun. This provides the Officers with an alternate less lethal force option. The Firearms Training Unit provides the necessary hands on training with the shotgun and beanbag round utilizing different types of scenarios.
