From left to right: Officer Cornelius Ashton, Officer
Matt Torres and Officer Jeff Claiborne at the staging area. |
Officers assisted with the countywide evacuations, traffic control, and
provided neighborhood security. Other officers patrolled District sites
during the campus closures to protect property and provide site
security. |

Officer Matt Torres was one of several officers sent to the County's
mutual aid staging area. "We staged for about two hours when my squad
was sent out to patrol the roads of Wildcat Canyon and the Muth Valley.
The first assignment was to check the Muth Valley area for residents
remaining in their homes. Second was to look for looters in the Muth
Valley area. For the remainder of the day we checked homes near Old
Barona Road for a fire restart and controlled a private access road into
Muth Valley and Wildcat Canyon. Oh yeah, and I rescued a dog named
"Dixie."
We are especially
proud of those officers who donated time to the relief effort after they
left work. Seeing the need, officers helped at the Qualcomm Stadium
evacuation center. Officer Richard Ferrell volunteered his time to
entertain evacuees and their children dressed as "Jack Sparrow"
from the movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean". |

On
November 2, 2007, members of the San Diego Community
College District Police Department, in conjunction with
the Mesa College Facilities Department, met to clean up
a transient camp behind the Mesa College Animal Health
Building. The camp, which was equipped with a propane
grill, a fire pit and several sleeping areas, was a
gathering place for individuals abusing drugs and
dumping waste in the canyon area and nearby stream. The
camp contained trash, human waste, hypodermic needles,
and other items such as clothing and tools.
After
a sustained effort to deter the activity, including
field contacts and arrests by College Police, a clean up
team was assembled. Over a three hour period, litter,
trash and makeshift structures were removed from the
camp.

To
prevent future illegal camping activity in the area,
College Police are working with the San Diego City
Attorney's Neighborhood Prosecution Unit in an effort to
obtain stay away orders on repeat offenders. |
